Youngstown woman accused of swindling cashiers

BROOKFIELD — A Youngstown woman is facing theft charges in two Trumbull County communities and another in Mahoning County after allegedly swindling cashiers at local businesses.

Lisa Minerd, 55, is being charged with misdemeanor theft counts stemming from incidents in Brookfield, Austintown and Cortland.

A Brookfield police officer was dispatched to Scotty’s Express Mart on April 16 when a caller reported that a customer, Minerd, had purchased $6 worth of lottery tickets and paid with a $50 bill. Minerd was given $44 in change, but put the money in her pocket and claimed to have only been refunded $4 — which resulted in her being given another $40, according to the Brookfield police report.

The officer was given a copy of the surveillance camera footage, which showed Minerd getting out of a tan Oldsmobile Intrigue, which was believed to be owned by one of its passengers, according to the report.

The report states the footage showed Minerd receiving the $44, separating it into two stacks and putting the stack with $40 in her left jacket pocket and leaving the remaining $4 in her right hand with the lottery tickets. She then complained to the cashier, who eventually gave her an additional $40.

Minerd was eventually arrested in Austintown following a traffic stop after city police officers appeared at the Mahoning Avenue Meijer in response to employees reporting a woman pushing out a cart of unpaid merchandise.

An Austintown police report alleges Minerd stole $707.63 in merchandise, which included home items, groceries and clothing. Another woman who was arrested with her allegedly stole $985.38 worth of items. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital following a fall after she was told she was going to be taken to the Mahoning County Jail.

Austintown police became aware of Minerd’s active warrant in Brookfield and transferred her custody to one of the township’s officers at a Girard Sheetz, where a follow-up Brookfield report states she asked if the warrant was “about the $40.”

The report states that Minerd complained that the other woman was released on a summons by Austintown officers while she had to go to jail. Minerd added it was unfair because the other woman stole over $900, and Minerd said, “I only took $40,” which the officer interpreted as an admission that she stole the money in April.

    BROTHERS PIZZA

An incident in Cortland involving Minerd had happened on June 12, when a city detective was notified of a theft incident at Brothers Pizza. Minerd had entered the store with a man and ordered two slices of pizza and, similar to the Brookfield incident, she handed the worker a $50 bill and received two $20 bills and several one-dollar bills as change.

The report states she distracted the worker by asking her to add pepperoni to the slices, and Minerd took both $20 bills and pocketed them. Unlike the Brookfield incident, however, the report states Minerd folded one of the bills she was given after being told she hadn’t received them, then told the worker she was shorted a $20 bill yet again.

Minerd and the man then left the restaurant without the pizza and left the premises in a blue four-door vehicle with an unknown driver.

The detective told a county prosecutor of the incident and showed her pictures from the security cameras. The prosecutor suggested the department file one count of theft by deception against Minerd.

Minerd is due back in court July 14 for the Austintown case and July 24 for the Brookfield case, according to court records. A warrant for her arrest is still active through Trumbull County Central District Court for her alleged Cortland theft.
